On April 6, 2007, the UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center held the official launch of the Western Cooling Efficiency Center (WCEC). The luncheon reception presented the center, recognized the center's Charter Affiliate members, and celebrated with a series of distinguished speakers. Featured presentions included:

Ralph Cavanagh, NRDC
Ralph Cavanagh is a senior attorney and co-director of the energy program at the Natural Resources Defense Counsel (NRDC), which he joined in 1979. In addition, he has been a Visiting Professor of Law at Stanford and UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall), and served from 1993 to 2003 as a member of the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board. His current board memberships include the California Clean Energy Fund, the UC Davis Energy Efficiency Center, the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, the Center for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Technologies, and the Northwest Energy Coalition. He is a member of the National Commission on Energy Policy, which the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation established in 2002. Mr. Cavanagh has received the Heinz Award for Public Policy, the Bonneville Power Administration’s Award for Exceptional Public Service, and the Lifetime Achievement in Energy Efficiency Award from California’s Flex Your Power Campaign. He is a graduate of Yale College and the Yale Law School.

Michael Siminovitch, CLTC
Michael Siminovitch, director of the California Lighting Technology Center and UC Davis design professor, is a graduate of Carleton University, where he received a Masters degrees in Industrial Design and a Masters in Architecture from the University of Illinois. Michael earned his Doctoral degree in Architecture and Human Factors Engineering from the University of Michigan. His work at the center entails research and development in new residential and commercial lighting technologies. Michael established partnerships with manufacturers, utilities and state agencies to develop, test and demonstrate energy efficient next-generation lighting systems. Siminovitch has developed many successful lighting products, including a high performance torchiere, an innovative fluorescent downlighting system and the Berkeley Lamp. |

Lois Wolk, California Assemblywoman
Elected to the California State Assembly in 2002, Assemblywoman Lois Wolk (D-Davis) represents the Eighth Assembly District, which spans Solano and Yolo Counties including the cities of Benicia, Davis, Dixon, Fairfield, Rio Vista, Suisun City, Vacaville, West Sacramento, Winters, and Woodland. Lois has earned a reputation as a problem solver. She has tackled difficult issue areas including transportation, education, health, housing, human services, political reform, public safety, environmental protection, and flood management. She is a founding member of the Bipartisan Group, a group of legislators from both parties working on bipartisan solutions to the state budget and political reform issues.
