Waste Heat Recovery For Food Safety

Put your waste heat to work.

UC Davis is partnering with food producers to develop waste heat recovery technologies that can cut energy costs and enhance food safety.

  • Are you a food processor looking for ways to reduce your energy bill?
  • Does your plant use a process that generates a lot of low grade (150F-300F) waste heat?
  • Is your company curious about novel ways to pasteurize and sanitize?

UC Davis researchers are developing a 1) low temperature method to sanitize and pasteurize products and sanitize using food-grade compounds, and 2) novel high efficiency polymer heat exchangers to extract heat generated by boilers that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere. These heat exchangers have many advantages: reduced fouling, better heat exchange, low pressure drop, and potentially lower cost. When applied together, the UC Davis solution will:

  • preserve nutritional content
  • extend product shelf-life
  • Cut energy bills
  • Achieve more comfortable temperatures for plant workers
  • Replace toxic sanitizing chemicals

If you fill out this form and meet the requirements, we can discuss installing our technologies as a demonstration at your facility!

The solution UC Davis is developing will use food-grade compounds, low-grade waste heat, and long hold times (60 seconds) to pasteurize products and sanitize surfaces and equipment. If you’re interested in talking with the researchers about how to make this solution work for your company, please leave your contact information.
